An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Secure the Position That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
