European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
