The star has given the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was awarded the award on mid-October as his new release the album was named the best record of the previous year.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the essential function local spots played in his initial steps.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties caused by floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in improving amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The notion that funds from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has said.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to good deeds.

Back when Pulp won the award in the year 1996 for their record the album, frontman the singer declared that the band would give their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer she split her bounty between several charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked new equipment," the artist told outlets.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective donated their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners the group gave their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked artist Heather Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected two grassroots venues in south-east England, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
