Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery

Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods

Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
