Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
