Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
